Somebody recently told me: “I don’t understand what activism has to do with running your business. You need to sell your work, not post about women’s right and issues.”
But you guys, the only reason I diverted to women’s portraiture from weddings was because I noticed how this culture treats women, how it makes them feel about themselves, what demands it makes of them and how they are expected to navigate thru life and it needs to change.
And the change starts by learning how not to hate yourself, or even parts of yourself.
Yes, I photograph happy confident women very often, but occasionally, I’ll photograph someone who truly needed to feel empowered and truly needed to feel beautiful in photographs. When I meet someone like that, and I get to ignite the flame of self love – that makes my job have purpose and meaning.
I don’t know how to run a business and only care about margins and profit and revenue. I am building something that not only pays bills but also creates positive social change.
And frankly, if not me, then who?
