My friend Vickie and I went to Mountain View High School together and met in French class. She laughed at all my stupid jokes and I kept making them because Vickie has THE best laugh in the world. I shared my mom’s sandwiches with Vickie and bonded over having immigrant parents – the highs and the lows.
Every time I photograph her beautiful family I’m blown away that life has kept us in touch. What are the odds, after all these years we’d still know each other’s kids, still live in the same city and once in a while even manage a hug or two. I’m so grateful, I could cry.
And listen – is it calm and peaceful to get family photos done with little kids and a puppy? No, it’s wild and chaotic but WE WILL GET OUR SHOTS. I shoot crazy fast and I know how to distract babies AND fur babies. My clown personality was made for this career.
I know it’s a lot of work to mobilize the whole family for pictures every year – TRUST me – I get mine done every year and I find myself sweating and issuing vague threats to the family I claim to love in exchange for the right kind of smiles. But I DO IT EVERY YEAR.
Cause dammit, they grow up so fast. And babies turn into toddlers, and moody toddlers turn into giant hams for the camera, and before you know it you’ll be getting those well behaved shots too. But in the meantime, if you want my advice, embrace the chaos and trust me to capture just what your family looks like right now, in this season of your life.
